The TIme, she is short...
Basically, I get shang-haied starting on the 7th and it doesn't end until I'm back from England on the 31st. I'm excited, terrified and utterly unprepared. Luckily, good folks have stepped up and made things much much easier.

I still gotta buy pounds. Not sure where to do that around here without paying Airport Exchanger fees. Gotta works on dat one.

As a reminder, I'm in and around London from the 15th through the 19th, and then there's a whole lot of Eastercon goin' on. Looking forward to the Dr. Who exhibit which a bunch of us will be doing on the 20th!

Wedding on Friday was awesome. Ken and Jerry put so much hard work into it and it turned out amazing. THe food was top notch, the facility was awesome and everythign went well. Linda made a Beer bouquet, which she later caught. The most fun wedding I've ever been to, though that total number is only 5 as of today.

I did Cinequest this weekend. I enjoyed the Aeriel with Linda and my buddy Neil. Very trippy and experimental. It went along very nicely with The Saddest Music in the World, which I've been watching lately. Linda and I had dinner at Askew. The food is really good there. I hope they have the Butternut Squash soup sometime when I'm down there. That stuff is plain good.

Yesterday I saw The Eternal City, which was kinda like Fellini's There's Something About Mary. I liked it, some really good acting and a great White Suit. I mean really, it was an awesome suit.

Since they were short an announcer, I announced for Disfigured, a very black black comedy-drama that was heavy at the same time as being entertaining. I loved the acting, very strong indeed. The director seemed to really like the announcing I did, which is always nice to hear. I thought is was a good movie, but there were moments that were just wrenchingly difficult to experience.

I had been asked to announce Sherman's Way and I did. Since it was at the Rep, I couldn't watch all of the film, but it had James La Gros in it and the amount I got to watch was very entertaining. Those filmmakers, who had requested me, also said they enjoyed the announcing and the Q+A was very entertaining, but it was all them and all I did was stand there waiting to put the mics back!

In-between movies, I got a phone call requesting that I announce someone else's movie. I was shocked as I've never gotten calls about doing the theatre announing before. Sadly, it's while I'm watching Evelyn tonight, so I can't do it.

After that was the Tenacious D film. It was a very good concert tour film. I was very impressed with the rawness of it and Kyle Gass was there! He was really funny and I talked to him for a minute or two. Afterwards there was a party and I went and chatted for a while before I headed out to the home and the sleep I so needed.

Good weenkend.

My suggestion is for you to use a credit card and or debit card if you have one. You can use the ATM's over there, however they do it in pounds not dollars (so pay attention ot the exchange rate.) and with credit cards you will get the best exchange rate for that day. Just as a suggestion..

I recommend getting your pounds from an ATM machine in London (or wherever your flight sets down.) No exchange fees and the rate is bank rate rather than usurious changers' fees.

HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME!

The cheapest way to buy Pounds is to just use your ATM card in a machine in the UK. Especially if you hit one of the almost-free ATMs at the airport.

Your bank will just charge you the end-of-day exchange rate, no extra fees.

Of course, this only works if you've got a Star or Cirrus ATM card but who doesn't, these days?

I no longer use Bureaux de Change or even the currency service at the Wells Fargo big-ol-branch in downtown SF, as both of those options involved getting rooked...

The best place to buy pounds is at the International Arrivals area of your airport, from British tourists who want to buy dollars.

Next best is at the International Departure area of your arrival airport, ditto.

Well thank you for marrying us! We totally thought that when Linda caught the bouquet, you'd say something like: "Oh no you didn't!" but the "Who is he - I'll kill him!" comment was just as funny.

And, yes, along with every one else - just use the ATMs... Whenever I can use a card, I do so as well. Plus for cash, my credit union refunds the service charge that the ATM machine's owner charges (if there is one...) so that makes me happy.

See you again on the 20th for the exhibition! BTW: If you're not booked for anything, we're planning to be in Brighton on the 30th to see the Brainiac Science Abuse Live show there...

Since there have been several people suggesting the ATMs, I'll put this as a general reply - banks have started charging fees for all international exchanges, both on ATMs and on straight credit card purchases (they started showing up on my amazon.co.uk purchases a few months ago). It may be cheaper to buy foreign currency from your bank. (All the big banks will do this - B of A in downtown Mountain View sold me my last batch of Pounds, Baht and Yuan). It takes a few days for them to get the money. You also could try an American Express office - there used to be one on campus at Stanford in the Tressider building. Check rates and fees online to see which way works best for you.

Here's a fairly up to date article/chart: http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/cc/20050624b1.asp

Before you leave, check with all of your credit/debit card companies and find out what they charge for using ATMs internationally. I found there was a $5 difference between my two bank accounts before I went on my DUFF trip.

While I agree with others that getting pounds from an ATM is the way to go, I like to arrive in another country with at least *some* local currency on me. American Express has a travel office on University (or at least they used to) that charges a flat fee for currency exchange.

Have a great time!

To get some so you have some before the whirlwind of arrival at the airport. I usually get about $100 worth at the American Express in Palo Alto. That way you can also get a variety of different denominations. If you have an AE card there is no fee. If you don't have an AE card, find someone who does (like me) and have them pick them up for you.

I'll throw in my voice for the American Express office and the ATM/credit card option. Most places in the City will take those for most things, and you're not going to do much in the country. Also, most places will give cash back - so you can stop by a 7-11 equivalent and pick up an Irn Bru or stick of gum and get a 20 or two.
