I just want to say right now that I *promise* that it was not my intention to deliberately bait [info]kevin_standlee. These things just . . . happen.

I'm not offended, nor did I feel especially baited. You are far more intellectually honest about your reasons than many of the other people who have weighed in on the subject.

I would, however, point out that the two times you were a Worldcon member, such as ConJose, you had a chance to make a difference the following year because your WSFS membership comes with nominating rights for the following year, at zero additional cost. As I and others have said to people complaining that not enough women are nominated for Hugo Awards, "Why aren't you nominating them?"

But if you don't think the awards are very important, then it makes sense for you to avoid having anything to do with them.

Why aren't I nominating them? Maybe I am, and they're not making the cut. *grin* But more seriously:

It's not that I don't think the awards are important; I just don't know that they have value to me personally. There are plenty of forms of recognition in the world that have value to other people, but not to me, and vice versa. I don't always see "the fannish community" as *my* community. It wasn't all that long ago that some portions of the fannish con-running community were putting considerable effort into making my subculture as unwelcome as possible at cons, after all. I have had fans tell me flat out "You're not welcome here. You and your kind don't belong in fandom."

As I've tried to explain, I come from "the personal is political" end of the spectrum. I recognize that there are some ways in which my intersection of interests with the fannish community is smaller than my intersection with the feminist community, the queer community, the leather community, the theological community. Could I nominate and press for more queer-identified theists to be recognized? Maybe. But maybe, it's not appropriate for me to push my agenda and my personal preferences on a community that doesn't share more than partially in my values or self-identity. I'm okay choosing that.

Beeteedubs, at my request, they've put me on the Fanboy Etiquette Panel with Schachat, which is probably gonna be the best thing that happens to me all weekend.

BTW, when's the deadline for the next Drink Tank. I know I promised you an absinthe column or six. I'm just a bit fuzzy on the deadline. ;)

The next issue probably won't be out until next week. I do it weekly, so anytime you got something, the wait's usually pretty short!

(Ahem) Johanna, was that absinthe column not promised to Science Fiction/San Francisco, sometime in the wee hours at Costume-Con? (I remember every detail. I wore gray vinyl; you wore black...)

I honestly can't remember who I promised it to. Feel free to fight it out, kids. :)

(although I suspect that you're right)

Well, since I edit both of them, and since SF/SF probably needs more content, I think that's where it belongs!

Very wise, considering that your Copy Editor is a Klingon.
Actually, I think the best solution is two absinthe pieces -- the one with the Local Angle goes in SF/SF, the other in The Drink Tank, Johanna gets more exposure (!), everybody's happy.

*ahem*

Like I need more! :)

Do me a favor, dudes? Drop me a line - johanna.mead(at)gmail(dot)com reminding me of the addresses at which you want the stuff flung? I'll try to bash something out over the weekend.
